Twice Shy By Sarah Hogle | Maybell Is The Most Relatable Character Yet

pages on an opened book

4/5

I took me over three months to read Twice Shy.

DESPITE THAT, Twice Shy by Sarah Hogle was a solid Rom-Com novel. I loved the wittiness and character of Maybell. She was such a relatable and realistic character that I resonated with. We all fantasize our life going one certain way and then life just screws it up.

The only thing that put me off was how often Maybell went into her own head. A few times throughout the book is fine but I felt it was too often. I felt sucked out of the plot and it took me a while to get back into the book’s groove.

I loved Wesley’s personality. His silent brooding was always a bonus but the slow diversion towards the end made my heart squeeze. His back-story was well-explained and, even better, realistic. Sometimes in books backgrounds can get kind of misconstrued or blurry because there isn’t enough detail but not here.

I enjoyed the events towards the end of Twice Shy. I’m seeing a theme with the ending here. I thought the last big hurrah was interesting and definitely unique. The build up to it gave me all the emotion to feel like I had been there with Maybell and Wesley.
