Saving Money | 6 Ways to Save Money in College

Maybe it’s just me but college actively tries to suck my wallet dry. Since I moved away for school, everything costs money. From Uber Rides to Amazon orders for last minute items that I forgot to buy my freshman year, I’ve consistently spent money on during my time in college. Below I’ll describe six ways to save money in college.

  1. HOW TO SAVE MONEY: Amazon Prime

As a college student, there are times, typically during midterms and finals, when you’re too busy to leave your room. Amazon Prime Membership costs $119 annually, BUT if you’re a college student, it’s only $59. That’s HALF OFF and when you first sign up, you get a six-month free trial. You get prime video, a platform that has countless movies and TV shows, and prime music, not that I’ve personally used it, but they have really good reviews. You have free 2 day shipping and an array of free books included in your membership.

Some museums that give you student discounts if you show your college ID and some you can even get into for free. There are also museums that the entrance fee is based off donation such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

  1. HOW TO SAVE MONEY: Movies

Check your local theaters because some movie theaters have discounts, e.g., $6 on Tuesdays.

  1. HOW TO SAVE MONEY: Free Food Events

If you’re on your college campus a lot, then look into events going on that clubs or departments are sponsoring. Most of the time, there is food that is free for the taking.

  1. HOW TO SAVE MONEY: Brita Filter

3 for $19.99 rather than 1 for $9.99

I bought one of these my sophomore year of college and it was one of the best purchases I could have made for college. You save so much money on water bottles and you only have to buy a new filter every couple of months. The filters are pretty cheap too.

  1. BONUS: HOW TO SAVE MONEY: Use Cash When You Go Out

When you go out with your friends, whether it’s on a day trip or just out for drinks, take cash. This will save you money in the long run when you don’t have your debit card or credit card on hand. Seeing the actual cash slowly dwindle will make you more conscious of your spending habits.
