I just have to start off that I feel like this month was three put into one. I don’t know what was in the water but time was going fast and slow simultaneously. Anyways, on to what you came here for—the books I read in May.
Damaged Like Us, Lovers Like Us, Alphas Like Us, Tangled Like Us, Sinful Like Us by Kristie & Becca Ritchie
I read the first five books of the Like Us series by Kristie and Becca Ritchie sporadically in May. I loved the Addicted/Calloway Sisters series. It even took me over a month to read Some Kind of Perfect because I didn’t want the story to end. Look, I was excited but also worried to start this series. I love a good second generation novel and since it was an entire new “world” I guess, it was even better.
I have only read Maximoff’s and Jane’s storylines (I know I’m missing the fourth Maximoff, which I am currently reading). Maximoff and Farrow were my first MM relationship that I’ve read and it was intriguing to say the least. The power play was what sucked me in, the dominant’s trying to take control of the situation. I enjoyed that each book had a purpose, a stepping stone if you will. However, the second and third book, while I enjoyed them, they could have been put into one. There was so much happening for one overall theme to me and it could have been condensed.
Now, for Thatcher and Jane. OH MY GODLINESS. Thatcher was *chef’s kiss*. I love a brooding character who only changes around their love interest. Also, Jane not being able to act normal around Thatcher was the most relatable thing I had read in a long time. Jane was just so quirky and normal. She didn’t know what she wanted to do with her life and she didn’t want to give up her independence for a man. I feel like that’s something every 20-something woman could relate to a thousand times over.
The Dragon’s Bride by Katee Robert
This story. Let me tell you about this story *laughing, crying emoji inserted here*. My best friend doesn’t read books like this, it just doesn’t appeal to her. But she knows that I read basically anything and everything (within the romance genre, let’s not get crazy). She asked me to read this and tell her how it is. I was all but too ready to sign up for duty lol.
It was one of those novellas that make you cringe but you can’t stop reading. It took me two days to read because the spicy was perfect with a dash of plot. No but seriously, the book was a solid 3.75/5. The second book in this series comes out in October I believe so I’ll have to wait until then to get my next fix.
Mr. Wrong Number by Lynn Painter
Mr. Wrong Number is a brother’s best friend romance. I didn’t really see a bunch of talk about it on Instagram or TikTok so I tried to go into it as blind as possible. It was a great book; fast and easy read. I liked the premise of everything to seemingly fall apart when, in reality, it was all falling together. I got sucked into this book instantly and I finished it in about a day and a half. The spicy scale was about a 2/5 but the plot of the book was so great that in never even felt necessary.
Hooked by Emily McIntire
I have had Hooked on my tbr list for months but there were always other books that I needed to read before it. But when my best friend said she was reading it, I was like, this is the perfect incentive. There was someone I could talk to about it.
This book was intense. I love dark romance and the high stakes that surround the plot. I also loved the Peter Pan retelling; the way each aspect of the original story held its own in Hooked was unique. Wendy didn’t really do it for me, she seemed more two dimensional and less complex than other characters in the story.
Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey
I loved this book. Tessa Bailey dropped me into this word filled with these complex characters that are each dealing with something unique. I read this book in one day. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. It was fantastic; a great beach read because that was in fact where I read most of it.
The couple in this story, Travis and Georgie, are so cute and relatable. I kept wanting to read their story. There wasn’t a huge climatic moment but it also wasn’t necessary so I’m glad for that. This was once again another brother’s best friend romance.
The only let down was that this is the first book in a trilogy. I didn’t know that and now I feel compelled to read it so it just made my tbr list grow.
