Freshmen Need to Branch Out of Their Comfort Zone

College, as a Freshman is overwhelming enough. New classes, new schedule, new people; it can feel like a lot. Tag on having to branch out of your comfort zone, and it can make some people not want to leave their room. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s not as scary as it seems, you just need to take your first step.

Branching Out of Your Comfort Zone

I remember one day that hit me that I was in college. Involvement Fair Day. It’s when the clubs and organizations are on the quad encouraging people to sign up. You have a few hours during the day to sign up for whatever you want. There were rows and rows of club sports, musical groups, and organizations, and I remember thinking “I can’t go in there.”

I was so overwhelmed by the entire scene because I was a Freshman and hadn’t really made any friends yet. I tried to stay on the outskirts of the area, only looking at 4, maybe 5 tables, tops.

Please don’t make my mistake and then regret it your senior year. Also, try to branch out of your comfort zone. Try out for an acapella group on campus if you’ve always been interested in singing and you’re pretty good at it. Or if you like playing sports for the fun of it, then join a club sport. Or if none of the clubs on campus catches your eye, but you have an idea of your own, then pitch it to your student government and make one. There are countless of ways you can get involved in your school.

Looking back now, I wish I could have mustered the courage to go up and down those rows. The worst thing anybody could have done was ask me to sign up for their club.

Don’t let those 5-10 minutes of fear keep you from branching out and trying new things.
