Book Review of Broken Vow by Sophie Lark 4/5

broken vow by Sophie Lark

Broken Vow is a bodyguard romance where tensions are high and cowboys are lethal.

Goodreads Summary

I’ll Protect Her… Whether She Likes It Or Not.

Riona Griffin is gorgeous, intelligent, and iron-willed. My perfect woman, except she hates my guts.

She thinks she doesn’t need anybody. But she needs me.

She’s being hunted by an assassin who never misses his mark.

I’m going to stay by her side, day and night, keeping her safe. Riona thinks that’s a fate worse than death but I know she’ll learn to love me.

If this hitman wants to kill her, he’ll have to go through me first.

Personal Review of Broken Vow

I loved the premise of Broken Vow when I read it. I was excited to see how it played out. My first surprise was how much of a slow start it was. I had a hard time in the beginning, pushing through chapter after chapter, but that usually wouldn’t bother me. The thing was that Lark’s previous novels in this series were all fast-paced and filled with action. Broken Vow was more mystery, “trying to find out who the killer was” type of deal. It picked up around 40 percent in. Mainly once they were at Raylan’s family ranch in the rocky mountain.

“I don’t want to trap you…I want to unleash you. I want to set you free. I want to show you what you really are.”

Riona Griffin is a workaholic lawyer and an independent woman, your typical strong heroine. Love has no place in her life, only her family is important to her. She wants to make partner in the law firm and help further manage her family’s mafia business.

Raylan used to be in the military and then worked for a contracted team. He can play the part of a nice man with the southern charm but he can also be a skilled killer if necessary.

“I promise to choose you over fear or selfishness. Over ambition and other cares.”

I definitely recommend Broken Vow. You would have to read the first four novels prior to this one, which are all also fantastic. Now saying that, within the Brutal Birthright series, this one isn’t my favorite for the reason that it took too long to pick up its pace.
